The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations.
The Natural Resources Commission (NRC) is the governing body for the DNR. In providing a strategic framework for the DNR to effectively manage the state's resources, the NRC works closely with a broad cross-section of constituencies, including the Michigan State Waterways Commission, to establish and continuously improve natural resources management policy.  State Waterways Commission was created by Act 320 of 1947 and transferred 
 to the Department of Conservation on January 1, 1966. The commission members 
 are appointed to three-year terms by the governor, with the advice and 
 consent of the senate. Upon expiration of a term, a member may continue 
 to serve until reappointed or a successor is appointed. Learn more about
