Little Presque Isle
More Information
Little Presque Isle – set along the Lake Superior shoreline in the Upper Peninsula – is located north and south of Little Presque Point near the mouth of Harlow Creek. This area is often called “the crown jewel of Lake Superior” for its beautiful sand beaches, rugged shoreline cliffs, heavily timbered forests and unmatched scenic views.
It’s a popular spot for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, wildlife viewing and paddling. There are six walk-in-only, rustic cabins; however, there's no camping available.
The rocks here are some of the oldest exposed formations of their kind in Michigan, dating back 2.3 billion years. More than a mile of bedrock lakeshore and cliffs adorn the island, including sandstone cliffs that reach nearly 60 feet high toward the base of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Little Presque Isle is one of only three places in Michigan where the public can see these ancient formations.
To help protect the resources and keep all visitors safe, please do not:
- Launch watercraft with an inboard or outboard motor, except an electric motor, into Harlow Lake.
- Use a mountain bicycle anywhere other than an abandoned railroad right-of-way, forest road or designated trail.
- Target shoot with a firearm, crossbow or bow.
- Operate a motorized vehicle or snowmobile (except on a forest road).
- Have open fires not in self-contained cooking units, fire rings or grills.
- Use or operate a loudspeaker, motor, motor vehicle, radio, television or any device in a manner that produces excessive noise.
