Where
The Institute for Fisheries Research (IFR) is located on the campus of the University of Michigan (UM) in Ann Arbor. Since May 2014 IFR has been housed in the North Ingalls Building (NIB), 4 blocks north of Rackum on North Ingalls Street. The IFR was in the Museums Annex Building from 1940 until May of 2014.

Who
As of 2004, 5 people are employees of Fisheries Division, Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). One person is University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment (UM SNRE) staff. Three UM SNRE graduate students have offices at IFR. Two people are Michigan State Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.

When
IFR was established February 7, 1930, by action of the University of Michigan. Dr. Carl Hubbs was the first director.

Why
IFR was formed to promote collaborative research between the State and UM on Michigan's fisheries. Staff and students at IFR conduct research to support fisheries management in Michigan.

IFR is one of six research stations of the DNR Fisheries Division.

As of year 2000, the Institute has supported, guided, and benefited from 74 Master's and 51 Doctoral students, and has published 2100 Fisheries Research Reports and 127 other reports.

Personnel at the Institute work closely with faculty, staff and students of the UM School of Natural Resources & Environment and the UM Museum of Zoology as well as staff at MSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.
